WebChondrocalcinosis, also known as pseudogout, a calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease, has been reported in many joints of the human body. A review of the literature reveals few reported cases of pseudogout of the ankle and various uncertainties of the etiology of pseudogout. Buildup of calcium phosphate in the ankle joints has been found in about 50% of the general population, and may be associated with osteoarthritis. Another common cause of chondrocalcinosis is calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystal deposition disease (CPPD).
